Born from chaos, thorays have an innate disregard for the normal course of nature. They can use their abilities to apply just the right push needed to change the course of somebody’s life. For better or worse. However, this must be done sparingly, because doing such drains on a thorays life span, and the only way to sustain this is to make bargains for the soul of their beneficiaries.

You might think asking for someone’s eternal soul is a price too high to ask for, but if you get enough people in one place, you get some people that would give anything for the life they want, people who are willing to give up the afterlife to make this life worth living, people who don’t believe in an afterlife, and people who’d rather risk no afterlife than eternal torment. Where these groups overlap, there’s always room for a thoray to make Faustian bargains.

Yet they are not as powerful as arch-devils or free as demon lords. They must fulfil their bargains or suffer the consequences. And with their innate power they can only do a little, and must be creative. They can’t make something out of nothing, but they can change what is already there. They can’t make one apple into two, but what difference does it make when they make the apple-tree bear fruit. Can’t conjure gold, but they can help harvests. Cannot alter the past, but they can reshape the memories of it. They may not be able to cause love to blossom, but they can make someone attractive. No strength, but natural weapons. No immortality, but perhaps another year or two to live. No reincarnation, but a resuscitation at a vital time.

What does it matter that you cannot grant wishes, when with a little creativity and effort, you can help someone most of the way.
